Dieser Band befasst sich mit der Frage, welche Faktoren die unterschiedlichen Formen von Demokratie beeinflussen. Vor dem Hintergrund der bisherigen Forschung, welche sich auf strukturelle Einflüsse beschränkt hat, rückt diese Analyse erstmals den Faktor Kultur ins Blickfeld. Dazu wird im Vorfeld der Analyse eine Kulturdefinition erarbeitet, deren Basis die theoretischen Konzepte Emile Durkheims, Max Webers und Talcott Parsons bilden. Die Daten des World Value Surveys ermöglichen anschliessend, Kultur empirisch zu fassen. Der Prädiktor Struktur wird anhand aktueller Faktoren operationalisiert. Die Analyse erfolgt mittels einer Stichprobe 20 westlicher Nationen, deren Demokratien mit Hilfe eines Index einen Wert zwischen den Polen Neokorporatismus und Pluralismus erhalten. Das Resultat überrascht: Die Struktur eines Landes scheint kaum eine Rolle zu spielen, während Kultur die Demokratieform einer Nation massgeblich prägt. Dabei erscheint die Religion als dominanter Faktor. Wie aber soll Religion und Demokratie verknüpft sein? Die Antwort wird in der Logik der protestantischen Arbeitsethik, der Bergpredigt und der europäischen Aufklärung gesucht.
