Kollektive Identitäten sind kommunikative Konstrukte. Sie sind diskursive Tatbestände, denen Inklusions- und Exklusionsprozesse gleichermaßen zugrundeliegen. Identitätskonstruktionen gehen daher stets einher mit der Konstruktion von Differenz, von Grenzen. Der Andere wird dabei als verschieden im Hinblick auf Rasse, Religion, Sprache, Geschlecht, Klasse o.ä. impliziert.Für die Formulierung einer europäischen Identität bot in den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg der Kalte Krieg die nötigen Rahmenbedingungen. Die Europäische Gemeinschaft grenzte sich gegen die Ostblockstaaten ab und bezog unter anderem daraus ihre Identität. Mit der Auflösung des Ostblocks geriet sie jedoch in eine regelrechte Identitätskrise. Ihre seit rund 50 Jahren unveränderten Grenzen wurden mit dem Verlust des Anderen im Osten in Frage gestellt. Heute ist es die Türkei, die so konstruiert wird, als stünde sie für Vieles, wofür Europa explizit nicht steht.Das vorliegende Buch ist eine Untersuchung von Bundestagsdebatten über einen Zeitraum von sechs Jahren. Es zeigt daran auf, wie die Türkei zum (kulturell) Anderen Europas gemacht wird, und zwar unabhängig von der Haltung zu ihrem möglichen EU-Beitritt.
