Die ?Rhetorical Structure Theory? ist eine Textanalysetheorie, die von William Mann und Sandra Thompson in den 1980ger Jahren entwickelt wurde. Text ist für Mann und Thompson die hierarchische Anordnung einzelner, funktional bedeutsamer Textteile zu einem Ganzen. Dabei trägt jeder Teil dazu bei Sinn und Einheit herzustellen. Die Anordnung bzw. Komposition der Textteile erfolgt über die ?rhetorical relations?, diese sind der Dreh- u. Angelpunkt der Theorie. Während eine Reihe von pragmatisch ausgerichteten Texten bereits mittels RST analysiert wurde, gibt es bis jetzt noch keine Untersuchungen auf dem Feld der literarischen Texte. Lässt sich ein literarischer Text mit Hilfe der RST analysieren und wie sinnhaft ist das Ergebnis der Analyse? Die Autorin Veronika Gründhammer stellt einführend die RST vor, diskutiert Für und Wider einer Anwendung auf die Literatur und versucht schließlich die Analyse des Schnitzlertextes "Blumen". Das Buch versucht mit Hilfe einer linguistischen Theorie zur semantischen Struktur von Texten einen Beitrag zur Textinterpretation zu leisten, der auch zur Integration von Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftbeitragen kann.
