Der Pentalogus ist die erste Schrift, die der Sekretär und poeta laureatus Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pius II.) am Hof Friedrichs III. verfasste. Er ist Ausdruck seines humanistischen Selbstverständnisses. In Dialogform schildert Enea Silvio ein fiktives königliches Ratsgespräch über die Themen Hof und Fürst sowie Kirche und Reich. Damit will er am Hof ein erweitertes Bewusstsein für die Bedeutung des Humanismus wecken und sich selbst sozial und politisch neu positionieren: Künftig will (und wird) er hier vor allem als Gesandter, Redner und königlicher Rat wirken. Die Frage nach den Funktionen des Humanismus lenkt bei der Analyse und Interpretation der literarischen Form und der Themen des Pentalogus den Blick auf Enea Silvio und die Leser des Dialoges («den Hof») gleichermaßen.
