Die Geschichte um Apollonius von Tyrus gilt als 'Lieblingsbuch des deutschen Mittelalters'. Die vorliegende Studie bietet nun erstmals eine synoptische Paralleledition der 'Apollonius'-Fassung, die der Ulmer Stadtarzt und Frühhumanist Heinrich Steinhöwel 1460 nach zwei lateinischen Vorlagen anfertigte. Auf der Basis eines detaillierten Material-Anhangs, der sämtliche Informationen zu Überlieferung, Textgenese und Übersetzungsverfahren versammelt, situiert der Forschungsteil Autor und Werk im sozialhistorischen Umfeld. Dabei werden sowohl literarhistorische als auch sozial- und wirtschaftsgeschichtliche Aspekte miteinander verknüpft, wobei insbesondere die literarischen, kulturellen und politischen Vernetzungen fokussiert werden. Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt, dass die vermeintliche Epochenschwelle um 1500 (besonders im deutschen Frühhumanismus) zu eklatanten Fehleinschätzungen geführt hat, weshalb die Termini 'Fiktionalität' und 'Historizität', 'Roman' und 'Historiographie' für Texte dieser Zeit grundsätzlich neu überdacht werden sollten. Gleiches gilt für den Humanismus-Begriff, der in Bezug auf Heinrich Steinhöwel und den 'Apollonius' im Speziellen nachhaltige Probleme verursacht hat.
