Gegenstand ist die Rezeption eines genuin volkssprachigen literarischen Phänomens, des Petrarkismus, in derjenigen Literatur des 15. bis 17. Jahrhunderts, die in der lateinischen Gelehrtensprache verfasst ist. Während der Petrarkismus, d.h. das Dichten über die Liebe in der Art des Francesco Petrarca (1304-1375), eines der wichtigsten Vertreter der frühen italienischen Literatur, für die volkssprachigen Literaturen, insbesondere für die italienische, französische, englische und deutsche, bereits gründlich erforscht worden ist, wurde die umfangreiche Liebesdichtung, die in dieser Zeit in petrarkistischer Manier auf Latein verfasst wurde, erst ansatzweise untersucht. Dieser Band ist der erste, in dem ausschließlich Texte, die zwischen dem 15. und dem 17. Jahhundert in verschiedenen europäischen Sprachräumen (italienisch, französisch, englisch, deutsch, niederländisch, polnisch, litauisch, schwedisch) auf Latein geschrieben wurden, im Hinblick darauf untersucht werden, wie in ihnen der Petrarkismus rezipiert, angeeignet, modifiziert, mit Elementen der antiken Literatur amalgamiert wird. Er ist also in die Erforschung der frühneuzeitlichen Statuskonkurrenz des gelehrten Latein mit den innovativen ästhetischen Errungenschaften der vorlkssprachigen Literaturen einzuordnen und verfolgt einen dezidiert interdisziplinären Ansatz.
