Geordnet werden die Gedichte, die Briefe und das Schuldrama nach den Schaffensperioden Schuljahre (1710/15), Universitätsjahre (1715/19), erste und letzte Wanderjahre (1719/21 und 1721/23) sowie nach den traditionellen Gattungen Leichencarmina, Geistliche und Klagegedichte; Lobgedichte, Promotionsgedichte, Propemptica, Satiren, Studentenlieder, Poetologische Gedichte, Freundschaftsgedichte; Hochzeitsgedichte, Galante und Verliebte Gedichte. Lateinische Texte werden in Original und Übersetzung wiedergegeben. Die Schreibung richtet sich nach dem ersten vollständigen Textzeugen. Das Variantenverzeichnis berücksichtigt die gesamte noch verfügbare handschriftliche und gedruckte Überlieferung. Die Erläuterungen beziehen sich auf literarische Quellen, biographische Fakten und sprachliche Probleme, bereiten also Interpretationen vor, ohne sie vorwegzunehmen. Verzeichnisse der zitierten Literatur, der Textanfänge, der Adressaten und Überschriften beschließen jeden Band. Der Dokumentenband bietet Abbildungen der Handschriften.
