Description
The agents which kill microorganisms or stop their growth are known as antimicrobials. Antimicrobial medicines can be classified according to the microorganisms they act primarily against or according to their function. For instance, antimicrobials used against bacteria are called antibiotics, whereas antimicrobials which kill fungi are called antifungals. Antimicrobial medicines are used in antimicrobial chemotherapy to treat infections. Antimicrobial chemotherapy is further divided into five types, namely, antibacterial chemotherapy, antifungal chemotherapy, anthelminthic chemotherapy, antiprotozoal chemotherapy and antiviral chemotherapy.
