You'd think this wine was from Provence. It has the same delicately pale, salmon-pink colour, the same soft and dry style, the same made-for-sunshine character. But Nannette's Rosé is made at Balfour Winery on the Hush Heath Estate in Kent — proof of just how far English still wine has come, helped along by a warming climate and a winemaking team refining their craft year on year. Balfour has been at the heart of the English wine movement since 2002, and while the estate built its reputation on sparkling wine made from the classic Champagne grapes, Nannette's takes those same varieties — Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay — in a different direction. The estate's clay, chalk, and greensand soils and carefully selected clones are key: each clone of each variety is hand-picked and vinified separately and sustainably, capturing the best of each before they're blended into Balfour's signature house style. Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier bring the soft red-fruit character; the cool climate keeps everything fresh and lively. In the glass it's crisp, fresh, and beautifully balanced, with flavours of strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry lifted by hints of tangerine, pear, and a floral, almost thyme-like note. The acidity is vibrant without being sharp, carrying through to a long, mouth-watering finish. It's a wine that, in the winery's own words, doesn't faff about — elegant without pretence, and dangerously easy to keep pouring. First made in 2010, Nannette's has become one of Balfour's sell-out stars, its annual release hotly anticipated. It's vegan and vegetarian friendly and certified sustainable, with a donation from every bottle going to the Kent Wildlife Trust. Directions Serve well chilled at 8–10°C in a white wine glass — cold enough to be refreshing, but not so cold that the strawberry, raspberry, and floral aromas are muted. No ice needed.
