North Sea Oil and the Environment published in 1992 provided an authoritive reference source for oil industry practitioners, regulatory authorities, educational and research institutions worldwide faced with similar types of development and environmental problems. This unique publication collated and recorded the invaluable knowledge gained from offshore developments, not only of historical accounts, but also to ensure coverage of the then current environmental planning for the North Sea and technological advances in environmental management. Section 1: Resource, Environment and Development provided an introductory framework of the themes resources, environment and development. Section 2: Economic and Social Impact was concerned with the economic and social consequences of oil related development, looking at the national economy and the impact on local communities.Section 3: Environmental Impact - Onshore dealt with impacts upon the physical environment and introduced the statutory land use planning system in Scotland. The Scottish approach to environmental assessment was reviewed and the need of mitigation by design was explored.Section 4: Environmental Impact - Offshore examined specific field developments and reviewed statutory controls and international initiatives regulating the extent of environmental disturbance and pollution from offshore operations. This section also included the effects of oil spillage and submarine pipelines on the environment and their impact on the fishing industry followed by discussions on decommissioning and abandonment of offshore installations.Section 5: Hazard and Risk focused on the role and value of hazard and risk analysis in the siting, layout and safety zoning of onshore facilities, developing a case study on a major fractionation facility and gave consideration to mitigating acute and chronic environmental risks.
