This Refractory Handbook for Petroleum Refineries represents an unprecedented technology refractory work for practical use, in the areas of inspection, planning, installation, as well as for the dry out in the field. It simplifies countless situations, provides invaluable information and tools for direct use, which will result in time savings and increased efficiency in different activities from the inspection of refractories to the operation of plants. Detailed refractory assessment tools are provided to help inspectors making the quick, weighted decisions that will enhance their functions. A group of inspection procedures for major refinery equipment are provided with step by step activities. On this regard, inspection criteria in a matter that may seem abstract are unified, to turn it into objective and clear processes, which are available to all field inspectors. All this is reinforced by clear description of refractory failure modes in major equipment, evaluation methods, detailed description of cracks and lamination formation and guidelines to perform failure analysis. A comprehensive review of quality assurance and quality control plan is provided. It presents criteria and actions that ensure compliance with material specifications, the use of qualified personnel and equipment. The implementation and fulfillment of these plans allow to increase the reliability levels of the equipment. They are prepared and approved with the contest of the different organizations involved: equipment inspection, engineering, maintenance, safety, material’s procurement, and operations. For planning, concepts are introduced that allows the engineers in charge of this management, to have a whole set of tools to develop in an objective and quantifiable way the refractory maintenance plans. Through this tool, maintenance personnel will be able to obtain the results of calculations of refractory and accessories. This, when sorted on a spreadsheet, will allow to know the total quantities required in each equipment and each component. A series of task performance and resource tables are also provided to guide planners and compare with previous refinery refractory maintenance output experience. In the area of execution, a series of necessary guidelines are established to conduct all planned resources in a clear and effective way for all parties involved, from procurement and material handling, to construction. A complete set of step by step demolition procedures for major equipment is provided, considering safety, health and environmental actions. Finally, in the dry out area of castable refractories, a number of concepts and guidelines are introduced that help to plan and perform dry out processes in an efficient and safe manner. Step by step dry out phases are graphically explained, and special safety hints are described.
