In offshore petroleum production systems, modeling of the multiphase flow dynamics is a complex task and a key issue in flow assurance. Reference textbooks in analytical methodologies mostly focused on steady-state conditions, while dynamic simulations leading to severe slugging rely on commercial computer codes used as black boxes. Severe slugging was studied mainly for air-water laboratory systems, showing significant differences compared to field conditions; besides, models and stability criteria were developed separately. “Multiphase flow dynamics and stability in offshore petroleum production systems - An integrated approach” fills a gap in the flow assurance literature. Effort was made in developing robust mathematical models and stability tools associated to these models. In the book, relation between the models and mathematical methodologies are described more in detail. In this way, it is believed that the book content, besides practitioners in petroleum technology, can be useful for undergraduate and graduate students as well. Results are shown, related to air&water experimental and O&G field data. Exercises are added at the end of many chapters, in order to derive some expressions appearing in the text and/or expand the concepts for other situations. "One of the most important contributions of this book is the application of stability (linear and nonlinear) to increase the robustness of the severe slugging predictive models. It provides stability maps to lessen the severe slugging transients for the surface operator computationally much faster. This is paramount in the project design and application in offshore producing wells, where changes in operating conditions, such as choking or gas injection, can be implemented to maintain the system in steady-state conditions." (Prof. Cem Sarica, from the book Foreword) About the author: Jorge Luis Baliño graduated and made a PhD in Nuclear Engineering at Instituto Balseiro (Argentina). He worked for Techint (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Comisión Nacional de Energia Atómica at Centro Atómico Bariloche (Bariloche, Argentina) and Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (São Paulo, Brazil). He is Professor at Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica at Universidade de São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil). His research interests are Thermal Hydraulics, Multiphase Flows and System Dynamics, with contributions in the nuclear and petroleum industry.
