O fenómeno da intimidação no local de trabalho e do assédio sexual entre os socorristas é predominante e prejudicial. Este estudo demonstra os efeitos que a intimidação no local de trabalho e o assédio sexual têm nas Organizações de Serviços de Emergência [ESOs] e o impacto nos alvos como sendo grave e generalizado, com consequências negativas para os alvos e para as organizações em que trabalham. Surgiram temas centrais para sustentar que o fenómeno tem implicações graves para a saúde psicológica dos alvos, implicações para a cultura organizacional e resultados de segurança pública que são graves, generalizados e têm consequências negativas para os indivíduos, a organização e o público. Os dados deste estudo mostram que os factores que influenciam o bullying e o assédio sexual no local de trabalho incluem a cultura organizacional (aceitável) e um "rito de passagem" que normaliza o comportamento e cria uma cultura tóxica propícia à incivilidade no seio das SSE. O impacto nos alvos inclui danos psicológicos graves e o esgotamento de recursos psicológicos que têm implicações negativas e duradouras para a saúde mental, bem como implicações para a segurança pública.
