Description

L'anacardier (Anacardium occidentale L.) est l'une des principales cultures tropicales, originaire du Brésil. Il a été découvert par les Portugais et introduit dans leurs colonies africaines et asiatiques. Au XVIe siècle, les explorateurs portugais ont emporté des anacardiers de ce pays d'Amérique du Sud et les ont introduits dans d'autres régions tropicales comme l'Inde et certains pays d'Afrique, où ils sont désormais également cultivés. L'anacardier a toujours été une ressource prisée en raison de son bois précieux, du baume de cajou et de la pomme de cajou, mais la noix de cajou elle-même n'a gagné en popularité qu'au début du XXe siècle. Aujourd'hui, les principaux producteurs commerciaux de noix de cajou sont l'Inde, le Brésil, le Mozambique, la Tanzanie et le Nigeria. La transformation de la noix de cajou est une activité très compétitive mais aussi potentiellement lucrative qui peut et doit être exploitée par un plus grand nombre de transformateurs à petite échelle. La noix de cajou a le potentiel d'augmenter les revenus des producteurs pauvres, de créer des opportunités d'emploi pendant la récolte et la transformation et d'accroître les exportations.
