Durch jede Fotografie wird ein Augenblick festgehalten. Ein wichtiger Moment wird dokumentiert und aus dem Fluss der Zeit herausgerissen. Etwas zu fotografieren heißt für die meisten Menschen einen flüchtigen und vergänglichen Augenblick mit der Kamera festzuhalten und ihn dadurch zu konservieren. Auf diese Weise fixiert man eine Erinnerung und kann sie sich jederzeit wieder „lebendig" machen. Fotografie bildet die Wirklichkeit ab und fixiert sie dauerhaft. Macht man sich Gedanken zur Fotografie, stellt man fest, dass diese ein durchaus paradoxes Wesen besitzt: Die Eigenschaft, einen Augenblick des Lebens festzuhalten und bis in alle Ewigkeit beizubehalten. Ebenso wird durch dieses Fixieren eines Augenblicks die Vergänglichkeit des fotografierten Objekts bzw. Individuums sichtbar gemacht. So streift das Medium Fotografie nah am unsichtbaren Tod vorbei, es mortifiziert das Leben vorträglich. Die Fotografie zeigt also nicht nur das auf, was einmal dagewesen ist, sondern auch das, was (irgendwann) nicht mehr sein wird. Diesem Aspekt widmet sich diese Studie, am Beispiel von Roland Barthes' „Die helle Kammer". Barthes untersucht darin das Wesen der Fotografie und nimmt Stellung dazu.
