Elle réunit les travaux inédits d'immenses artistes - alors tout jeunes - comme Jacques-André Boiffard, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisèle Freund, Germaine Krull, Eli Lotar, Lisette Model, Willy Ronis, ou René Zuber ainsi que de photographes anonymes. Engagés dans la lutte antifasciste, la révolution sociale et le pacifisme, les professionnels de l'Association des écrivains et artistes révolutionnaires (AEAR) et les Amateurs photographes ouvriers (APO) s'emparent de la photo comme d'une arme pour documenter et dénoncer les réalités sociales en France et dans le monde. De ces nouvelles pratiques naît une grammaire visuelle et graphique au service du combat politique porté par une formidable dynamique de magazines, brochures, tracts, affiches... Un foisonnement qui n'est pas sans évoquer l'essor actuel des usages militants de l'image partagée sur Internet.
