Mathematik und Literatur, Berechnung und Imagination, formale und bildliche Sprache, nichts scheint unvereinbarer als diese beiden Arten, die Welt zu betrachten. Und dennoch treffen sie sich, wie diese Studie überzeugend darlegt. Ihr Gegenstand ist die französische Autorengruppe Oulipo (Ouvroir de littérature potentielle), die im Umfeld des Strukturalismus und des Nouveau Roman, der modernen Mathematik und der postmodernen Philosophie gegründet wurde und bis heute originelle Werke hervorbringt. Dabei erscheint ihr Erfolgsrezept ebenso verwegen wie antiquiert: Das schriftstellerische Schaffen durch formale Zwänge, die so genannten contraintes, anzuregen. Die vorliegende Arbeit weist die erkenntnistheoretische Nähe dieses Schreibkonzeptes zur Weltsicht der postmodernen Philosophie und der modernen Mathematik nach. Es wird deutlich, dass der Rekurs auf «sinnentleerte» Regeln den Nerv der Zeit trifft und eine adäquate Weise darstellt, sich mit einer problematisch gewordenen Realität auseinander zu setzen. Eine neuartige, detaillierte Interpretation von Georges Perecs Roman La Disparition, dem Aushängeschild der Gruppe, zeigt, dass dabei die literarische Moderne überwunden und im Erkenntnismodell der Absenz eine neue Basis bereitgestellt wird. Diese komplexen Zusammenhänge sowie die philosophischen und mathematischen Grundlagen der Untersuchung werden auch für Nichtfachleute verständlich dargestellt und durch zahlreiche Materialien ergänzt. Dies gilt ebenso für das kaum erforschte Wirken des einflussreichen mathematischen Geheimbunds Bourbaki, der den Gründern des Ouvroir, Raymond Queneau und François Le Lionnais, als Vorbild diente, wie für erstaunliche Übereinstimmungen zwischen literarischer und mathematischer Kreativität.
