Was ist ein Medium? Diese Frage nach einer grundlegenden Bestimmung des Medienbegriffs hat in der Medienforschung zur Zeit Konjunktur. Die sozialwissenschaftlich-empirisch ausgerichtete Kommunikationswissenschaft, die Publizistikwissenschaft und die geisteswissenschaftlich orientierte Medienwissenschaft geben in der gegenwärtigen Begriffsdiskussion scheinbar unversöhnliche Antworten. Daß diese auf semantische Optionen zurückgeführt werden können, die in der Bedeutungsstruktur des Wortes resp. des Begriffs Medium angelegt sind, zeigt aber die Begriffsgeschichte. Die ""Geschichte des Medienbegriffs"" breitet das semantische Spektrum des Begriffs des Mediums aus, kontrastiert die Begriffsgeschichte mit aktuellen Positionen der Medientheorie und legt dadurch schließlich das Fundament zu einem integrierenden Begriffsverständnis für alle Disziplinen der Medienforschung.
