Steffen Reik untersucht die Heterogenität der Kunden in Bezug auf ihre Informationsasymmetrie zu den Verkäufern eines Vertrauensgutes. Er beweist, dass die Existenz informierter Kunden nicht zwangsläufig zu effizienteren Märkten führt, sondern tatsächlich effiziente Gleichgewichte stören und die soziale Wohlfahrt negativ beeinflussen kann. Da bei Vertrauensgütermärkten, wie sie auch im Gesundheitswesen und der Finanzbranche vorkommen, eben diese Informationsasymmetrie ursächlich für Marktineffizienzen ist und das betrügerische Verhalten der Verkäufer erst ermöglicht, wirken die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit intuitiven Vorstellungen entgegen. Sie ist damit nicht nur für Theoretiker, sondern insbesondere auch für Praktiker innerhalb von Vertrauensgütermärkten von hoher Relevanz.
