Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit der Schnittstelle zwischen dem Kindergarten und der Volksschule. Das österreichische Bildungssystem mit seinen vielen Übergängen zwischen den einzelnen Institutionen ist für die kindliche Entwicklung nicht förderlich. Die Übergänge an sich sind aber nicht das eigentliche Problem, sondern die mangelnde Kommunikation an diesen Schnittstellen. Eine Annäherung der Institutionen in Form von Kooperationsprojekten ist eine adäquate Möglichkeit, diese Transition besser zu gestalten. Dies wurde durch die Evaluierung solcher Projekte untersucht. Dabei hat sich gezeigt, dass sich die Kooperationspartner im Spannungsfeld zwischen Frühförderung und einer sanfteren Übergangsgestaltung befinden. Organisationsübergreifende Kooperationen bedürfen auch einer sorgfältigen Planung und Projektumsetzung, wobei sich das Einsetzen einer Steuerungsgruppe als günstig erweist. Bei den evaluierten Projekten wurde dies nicht bzw. zu wenig berücksichtigt, und so haben die Pädagoginnen durch die fehlenden Kommunikationsstrukturen Probleme gehabt, ihre Ängste, Erwartungen und Zielvorstellungen mitzuteilen, wodurch Widerstände entstanden sind.
