Ein Krafttraining mit submaximalen Krafteinsätzen führt zu einer Muskelhypertrophie. In dieser Studie wurde untersucht, ob und inwieweit sich die Zufuhr von L-Glutamin zur normalen Ernährung während einer 8-wöchigen Krafttrainingsperiode auf das Ausmaß einer zu erwartenden Muskelhypertrophie und ausgewählte Parameter der Körperzusammensetzung auswirkt. In der L-Glutamingruppe (tägliche Zufuhr von 10g L-Glutamin) trainierten 12 männliche Probanden, während in der Vergleichsgruppe (Training ohne L-Glutamingabe) 7 Probanden nach einem vorgegebenen Trainingsplan das Krafttraining absolvierten. Beide Gruppen trainierten 3x pro Woche, wobei alle 2 Wochen ein 10er Repetitionsmaximum erhoben wurde um zu gewährleisten, dass die Probanden mit einer für die Muskelhypertrophie ausreichend hohen Intensität trainieren. Zusätzlich wurden bei jedem der Probanden vor Trainingsbeginn und nach Trainingsende die Dicke subkutaner Fettschichten (Lipometer) und die fettfreie Körpermasse (mittels bioelektrischer Impedanzanalyse) gemessen. Anthropometrische Messungen (Körperhöhe, Körpermasse, Körperumfänge) wurden ergänzend eingesetzt.
