Die Salzburger Gemeinde St. Gilgen am Wolfgangsee war im Juli 2004 Schauplatz eines äußerst seltenen Ereignisses: Nach 850 Jahren wurde in Österreich wieder ein selbstständiges Benediktinerkloster kanonisch errichtet, das Europakloster Gut Aich. Die Idee dazu hatte ein Mönch aus Metten (Niederbayern), Pater Johannes Pausch. Gemeinsam mit seinen Mitbrüdern baut er seit 1993 das Kloster mit einem Gästehaus, einer Kellerei und einem Gesundheitszentrum auf. Doch wie kam es zu der Idee, im 21. Jh. ein Kloster zu gründen? Wie verbindet die junge Mönchsgemeinschaft ihren Alltag, dessen Grundlage die 1500 Jahre alte Benediktusregel ist, mit dem modernen Leben? Die Autorin Michaela Maria Kührer sucht die Antworten zunächst in der Vergangenheit: In einem historischen Überblick stellt sie die Bedeutung der Benediktiner im sozialen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Gefüge im Laufe der Jahrhunderte im heutigen Österreich und Süddeutschland dar. Außerdem zeigt sie Konstanten und Veränderungen auf, die benediktinisches Leben bis heute prägen. Die Gespräche mit Pater Johannes Pausch über die Gründung und das Leben im Europakloster können im Anhang nachgelesen werden.
