La découverte de l'oeuvre de Georges Focus, peintre et dessinateur du XVIIe siècle, suscite aujourd'hui l'étonnement. Académicien, il se spécialise dans le genre du paysage classique. Après 1683, il est enfermé dans un asile parisien, les Petites Maisons. Il réalise alors des " écritures dessinées " publiées ici pour la première fois. Ces dessins sont l'unique trace de la production d'un artiste aliéné à cette époque. Ils nous permettent de pénétrer de plain-pied au coeur de l'existence, des états d'âme, des souffrances et des obsessions d'un artiste habité par des rancoeurs et des ressentiments exacerbés. Ce livre réunit des recherches et des réflexions d'historiens de l'art et de la médecine, de psychiatres et de chercheurs sur la question du rapport entre l'art et la folie.
