Riche de plus de 4000 dessins intégralement reproduits ici, et tous commentés, cet ouvrage offre une encyclopédie visuelle inégalée du Japon au début du XIXe siècle, de sa nature comme de ses activités humaines, de ses croyances et de son imaginaire. Un tableau sans égal animé par le trait virtuose, précis et enjoué de Hokusai. Cette édition luxueuse de deux tomes sous coffret reproduit l’intégralité des 15 volumes de la Manga dont trois publiés à titre posthume. La reproduction en trois tons, fidèle à l'originale est commentée du point de vue anthropologique, artistique et culturel planche après planche par Matthi Forrer, spécialiste de Hokusai. L’étui offre un véritable écrin aux deux ouvrages. Il revêt une reproduction de l’œuvre « Tigre qui court, Hashiru tora» de Hokusai et proposé avec une toile orange en tête et pied de coffret. Le titre ainsi que le dessin qui figure au dos « Autoportrait à l'âge de quatre-vingt-trois ans par Katsushika Hokusai » sont reproduits en dorure métallisée orangée. Ce même dessin en dorure est repris sur la couverture de chacun des tomes. Un ouvrage précieux, tant sur le fond que sur la forme.
