Cet ouvrage est la première publication en langue française consacrée aux estampes d'Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) destinées à décorer des éventails plats, les uchiwa-e. Ces oeuvres produites parallèlement aux célèbres séries de gravures sur le Tokaido ou sur la ville d'Edo, qui ont fait la réputation universelle de l'artiste , restent très mal connues, car elles ont été rarement conservées, à cause de leur support éphémère. Leur corpus est néanmoins estimé à environ six cents. La collection réunie par Georges Leskowicz, avec près de 120 pièces réalisées entre 1836 et 1858, constitue le plus important ensemble jamais constitué, avec celui du Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres. La qualité des tirages, comme leur rareté une quarantaine étant des pièces uniques, publiées pour la première fois font de cet ouvrage une contribution majeure à la connaissance d'un pan méconnu de l'oeuvre d'un des derniers grands imagiers de l'époque d'Edo. Les gravures pour éventail, de par leur format et leur usage, sont des productions originales, souvent innovantes graphiquement, qui se distinguent des traditionnelles ukiyo-e, les estampes en feuilles volantes.
