Ronsard ne laissait rien au hasard ; en témoigne le soin qu'il a apporté aux éditions de ses Ouvres, et notamment à la dernière qui ait été publiée de son vivant, celle de 1584, ici reproduite. Les pièces, écartées, par leur auteur, du livre de 1584 sont données en appendice. Quant aux textes que Ronsard n'a jamais fait entrer dans ses Ouvres, on les trouvera, dans un "Complément", qui contient notamment les pièces latines ou en prose, les oeuvres écrites en collaboration ou d'attribution douteuse - tous textes peu accessibles jusqu'alors - et, bien sûr, Les Derniers Vers. A la fin de ce deuxième et dernier volume sont proposés une Bibliographie, un Glossaire, et un jeu de Tables sans équivalent à ce jour. La Table des incipit, par exemple, recense non seulement, comme il se doit, les incipit des pièces dans la version publiée ici, mais aussi, lorsqu'ils sont différents, les incipit de toutes les autres versions de chaque pièce, de sorte que le lecteur puisse retrouver aisément les vers qu'il souhaite relire, quelle que soit la version dont il conserve le souvenir. A Ronsard, resté célèbre comme lecteur, correcteur, éditeur de ses oeuvres, la présente édition restitue son Livre, tel qu'il l'a voulu ; et elle offre à chacun son Ronsard, tel qu'il le rêve.
