Ni la philosophie, ni la religion, ni l'histoire, ni, bien sûr, la musique ne lui sont étrangères ; rien n'est inégal à la poésie dans l'esprit de cet homme chez qui génie et culture se rejoignent et s'harmonisent pour produire un langage dans lequel André Suarès voyait "la pensée de la nature qui a pris conscience". L'oeuvre est donc chatoyante, c'est ce "pré de diverse apparence", qui, de l'avis même de ses contemporains, confère à Ronsard l'entière possession de la palme que les Anciens, Homère, Pindare, Virgile, avaient partagée. Conscient d'une variété qu'il compare à un paysage tout en contrastes, le poète, en multipliant les éditions collectives de ses oeuvres, assigne un ordre à la diversité et veille à la perfection de sa poétique. Ces éditions sont autant de monuments dressés contre le chaos, contre le temps, contre la mort, dont Ronsard sait qu'elle le guette mais à qui il dérobe le meilleur de lui-même, son Livre. La dernière collective parue de son vivant, celle de 1584, ajoute ainsi à ses qualités matérielles une indéniable valeur testamentaire. Elle constitue l'ultime témoignage d'une poétique de l'édition, et l'aboutissement d'une quête, celle de l'immuable.
