Description

Originally published in 1980, this historical and annotated translation examines Dogen, the founder of the Soto School of Zen and one of Japanese Buddhism's most influential thinkers. This seminal study was the first to trace in detail the line of continuity between Dogen and his Chinese predecessors through his master Ju-ching, offering scholars and students of Buddhism a comprehensive exploration of Dogen's formative period in Sung China. The work combines a sterling translation of the Hokyo-ki with careful annotations and historical background material, making it an essential resource for anyone studying Dogen's intellectual development, Zen Buddhism history, or the cultural exchanges between Chinese and Japanese Buddhist traditions during this pivotal era.

Key Features
