Description

The Linjilu stands as one of Chan and Zen Buddhism's most influential foundational texts, celebrated for its masterful use of vernacular literature and its unforgettable central figure, Master Linji. This new translation by Jeffrey L. Broughton brings fresh insight to the teachings of a true person embodying buddha-nature through non-verbal, unconstrained spontaneity. The Record of Linji reveals how Master Linji guides students toward understanding that nothing is lacking in daily activities, presenting the core principles of Zen practice through memorable dialogue and dynamic instruction. Broughton's bracing interpretation contextualises the classical text through the lens of ten Japanese Zen commentaries, offering contemporary readers a pathway to grasp how Linji's teachings transcend passive observation in favour of active, aware engagement with reality. This Oxford University Press edition serves scholars, practitioners, and anyone seeking deeper comprehension of Zen Buddhist philosophy and its practical application to everyday life.
