Description

This scholarly volume explores how to interpret D gen's texts authentically, addressing interpretive challenges that emerged during the Meiji period when D gen's work became subject to philosophical appropriation both within monastic communities and beyond. The book examines competing scholarly approaches to D gen studies, including Zennist perspectives that emphasise practice, Genz nian methods that prioritise close textual reading, and modern laity movements that make both texts and Buddhist practice accessible to contemporary society. Published by Springer as part of the Sophia Studies in Cross-cultural Philosophy of Traditions and Cultures series, this work synthesises multiple interpretive traditions whilst addressing fundamental questions about authenticity and methodology in Buddhist philosophy. Essential for scholars, religious studies students, and readers seeking nuanced understanding of D gen's philosophical and spiritual legacy.
