Description

Deconstruction and Translation by Kathleen Davis offers a groundbreaking exploration of how Jacques Derrida's philosophical insights can reshape both practical and theoretical approaches to translation. Rather than viewing translation as simple meaning transfer or passive reproduction, Davis argues that there is no stable source text, no single origin, and no transcendent meaning to preserve. This reframing places emphasis on the translator's freedom and individual responsibility in navigating the complex act of translation. The book begins with an analysis of the proper name as a fundamental model for understanding signification problems, then moves through revised concepts that challenge traditional translation theory. Published by Routledge, this work is essential reading for translation scholars, linguists, philosophers, and anyone seeking to understand how deconstruction fundamentally alters our comprehension of what translation actually means and accomplishes.

Key Features

Deconstruction and Translation applies Derrida's philosophy to resolve longstanding practical and theoretical translation problems.

Davis examines the proper name as a conceptual model for understanding broader signification issues in translation work.

The book reframes translator responsibility, emphasising freedom and individual agency rather than passive meaning transfer.

Routledge's translation theory collection provides academic depth for scholars studying deconstruction and linguistic philosophy.

This work challenges stable source text assumptions and explores how translation operates without transcendent meaning.
