Description

Experience Apple Cores, the latest full-length album from New York tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis. Recognized by The Guardian as one of the fiercest sounds in jazz today, Lewis brings a unique approach to this recording. The music is informed by the rhythms and textures of hip-hop and funk while remaining deeply rooted in jazz traditions. Recorded during two intense and entirely improvised sessions, this album features a powerful trio including Chad Taylor on drums and mbira, and Josh Werner on bass and guitar. The title draws inspiration from the column written by poet and jazz theorist Amiri Baraka for DownBeat in the 1960s. This release from PIAS and Anti offers a deep exploration of modern improvised music.
