Conçu, écrit et réalisé a la main au début des années 1960 comme prototype par le photographe Roy Decarava (né en 1919j, mais toujours inédit depuis près d'un demi-siecle, Le son que j'ai vu est devenu une légende dans le monde de la photographie. Avec ses 196 images pleines d'humanité, entrecoupées par la poésie si suggestive de Roy Decarava, ce livre est, par sa forme même mais aussi par son impact émotionnel, l'équivalent imprimé du jazz. C'est un livre sur les gens, sur le jazz, sur les choses. Le travail qui y est présenté propose des images pour l'esprit et pour le cœur. Et, comme son sujet, il est particulier, subjectif, personnel, écrit l'auteur. New-Yorkais de longue date, Roy Decarava crée, a partir de son univers immédiat, des images capables de dépasser leur singularité pour aborder des thèmes universels comme la joie, l'attente, la souffrance ou la lutte pour la survie. Rarement publié, il se fit connaître par ses images de la vie quotidienne à Harlem (sujet de THE SWEET FLYPAPER OF LIFE, qui concrétisa, en 1955, sa collaboration avec le poète de la renaissance de Harlem, Langston Hughes) et ses portraits de musiciens comme Duke Ellington ou Billie Holiday. Ce sont ces deux noms - Harlem et Jazz -, entrelacés et indissociables, qui constituent le sujet premier de ce livre. Cependant, les compositions apparemment anodines et la tonalité profonde des photographies de Roy Decarava éveillent les émotions dont la résonance va bien au-delà d'un simple quartier ou d'une seule époque.
