Description

Skanderbeg in American Prose and Press reintroduces two rare fictional works—James M. Ludlow’s The Captain of the Janizaries and John H. Crabb’s In the Crescent’s Dark Shadow—that explore the life and legend of the Albanian hero Gjergj Kastrioti, also known as Skanderbeg or Iskander Bey. This edition presents not the familiar text of Ludlow’s The Captain of the Janizaries, long available in book and digital formats, but a different version altogether: the illustrated newspaper serialization—not seen in over a century—that first introduced Skanderbeg to a mass American readership. It also includes the complete text of Crabb’s hard-to-find novel, In the Crescent’s Dark Shadow, a forgotten historical novel that reimagines Iskander Bey’s rise and role within the geopolitics of the fifteenth-century Balkans. Although Ludlow’s illustrated serial story and Crabb’s novel once entered—and later faded from—American literary consciousness, neither has been incorporated into the broader Skanderbeg scholarship. This critical edition thus maps the transatlantic journey of Skanderbeg’s legend and legacy in American prose and the periodical press, providing readers and scholars with an opportunity to reassess Skanderbeg’s representation in American literary history.
