This book extensively updates and greatly extends the previous work on the English Mainline Savage family contained in the book entitled “The Ancient and Noble Family of the Savages of the Ards…..,” by G. F. Savage-Armstrong (published in 1888), which mainly describes the Irish Savage family of the Ards. Compared with the 19th century, a great many more documents have become available in the present day, and many of the inaccuracies within the lines of descent of the English Savages in the Ards book, have been resolved and expanded, with further branches being uncovered. The Mainline Savage (le Sauvage) family originated from Normandy, in France, and arrived in England during the reign of William the Conqueror, either in 1066 or very soon afterwards. The first of the line was Robert I le Sauvage, and the family's main seat of power was situated at Broadwater (in Worthing), Sussex, where they resided for nearly 200 years. By c.1253, they had become almost bankrupt, and moved their family seat from Sussex to Stainsby, in Derbyshire, which manor was one of the last two remaining manors held by the family. There they resided for the next hundred years. In the mid-14th century, John I Savage (d.1386), married an heiress of Cheshire, and consequently moved the family seat to Clifton, in Cheshire, where the Mainline flourished for the next 400 years living in the great mansion of Rock Savage. Several members of the Savage family held positions in the Royal Court of both Henry VII and Henry VIII. Later in the 17th century, they entered the ranks of the aristocracy and were members of the Court and Household of the Stuart Kings. However, in 1737, the last male member of the line died without any issue and the Mainline came to an end. A number of branches of the Mainline Savage family were established in the counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. Also in Ireland, a number of branches descended in several counties from the first le Sauvage, who settled on the Ards peninsula in 1177. However, for the majority of the English lines who descended from the Mainline, almost all of the legitimate male descendants appear to have died out by the year 1900. The descent of the Mainline Savage family, who originated in Sussex, is given in the book, along with the descents of many of the branches who are known to have descended or probably descended from the Mainline. Several other Savage families are also included who may or may not be connected with the Mainline.
