Description

The first known Savage family of Nottinghamshire occurred in about 1240, when Thomas le Sauvage (b.c.1228-d.<1242), a younger son of Robert VII le Sauvage, Knight (b.c.1200-d.c.1256), of Broadwater, Sussex, and Stainsby, Derbyshire, was buried at Newstead Priory. The manor of Stainsby, in Derbyshire, lies about 8 miles north-west of Newstead. In about 1250, Gerard le Sauvage, another younger son of Robert VII le Sauvage, Knight (b.c.1200-d.c.1256), moved from Stainsby to Gateford, near Worksop, in Nottinghamshire, where he established a line, which was flourishing in 1300. In 1440, there was a Thomas Savage of Blyth, in Notting-hamshire, who was a defendant in a lawsuit of the Prior of Blyth. In about 1480, a cadet branch of the Mainline family of Stainsby in Derbyshire and Clifton in Cheshire, was established in Hucknall Torkard by John Savage, Esq. (d.1493), who was the eldest son and heir of Arnold Savage, Gent. (d.c.1488), of North Wingfield (abutting Stainsby) in Derbyshire, who himself was the second son of John III Savage, Esq. (b.c.1400-d.1464), of Stainsby, Derbyshire and Clifton, Cheshire. The second son, John Savage, of John Savage, Esq. (d.1493), was appointed as the Rector of Shelford, in Nottinghamshire. Furthermore, Ralph Savage, the known illegitimate son of Arnold Savage, Gent. (d.c.1488), resided in Newstead in Nottinghamshire. Also in the late 1400s, two of the younger sons of Sir John IV Savage, K.B. (b.c.1422-d.1495), of Clifton and Macclesfield, Cheshire, and Stainsby, Derbyshire, resided in Nottinghamshire : James Savage, Esq. (d.c.1511), at the manor of Linby, and Richard Savage, Esq. (d.c.1538), at the manor of Gresley Castle. In 1480, there was a John Savage (d.>1480), of West Leake in Nottinghamshire, who acted as a witness in the Inquisition Post Mortem of Sir William Plumpton, Kt., but no further information is known about this John Savage. West Leake lies about 2 miles from Sutton Bonington where from about 1570, an extensive Savage family was known to reside, and from which several different branches spread to the villages around. The Savage families of Sutton Bonington are so extensive that they are given in the next volume (volume 8) of this series on the History of the Savage Family. In 1490 in the cathedral town of Southwell, there was a Christopher Savage who died, and had had issue of three sons, Henry, John and Thomas Savage. In the mid-1500s, several Savage families resided in Southwell who probably descended or were kinsmen of the first known family of Christopher Savage (d.1490). The descendants from the Savage family of Southwell are numerous and are given in this book. Within the county of Nottinghamshire there were six main Savage Lines or Families which occur in the following regions of Nottinghamshire : (1) Southwell and the surrounding villages, (2) Sutton Bonington and the surrounding villages, (3) Gedling, (4) Mansfield, (5) Worksop and (6) East Retford. Apart from the Lines of Sutton Bonington and Mansfield, all the above Savage Lines and many of their branches, along with other unrelated Savage Families who moved into Nottinghamshire from other counties, are outlined in this volume.
