Description

The Avery family of Mid-Sussex has existed in the region for over 400 years, and the details of each generation are described in this book. The earliest known member of the family was Thomas Avery (b.c.1570-d.1636), who resided in both Cuckfield and Hurstpierpoint in Sussex, during the 16th and 17th centuries. Thomas Avery had issue of two surviving sons : Thomas Avery (b.1602-d.1678), and Nathaniel Avery (b.1604-d.1680), both of whom remained in Hurstpierpoint. Most of the children of the two brothers remained in the vicinity of Hurstpierpoint, moving to the local villages of Clayton, Keymer, and Wivelsfield. Some of the grandchildren and their offspring moved further afield to Hamsey, Lewes and Lindfield. Later generations moved to Balcombe, Barcombe, Chailey, Danehill, East Chiltington, Framfield, Maresfield, Newick, and Scaynes Hill. Some members of the Avery family ventured farther afield in the 19th and 20th centuries to various states in the USA and Canada. The research undertaken on this Avery family of Mid-Sussex has been underway for more than 80 years, from when Mrs E. Mary Offer started in the 1930s to the present publication of this book..
