Many years ago, the Orkney Islands - located on the Northern tip of Scotland - used to belong to what is now Norway. This unique history has shaped our Islands in many ways, traditions, folklore and even in our speech. Much of this can still be seen and heard, particularly when chatting to locals, who often speak with an 'Orcadian' dialect unlike other Scottish accents or dialect. Aquavit (Akvavit) has been enjoyed in Scandinavia for hundreds of years now, originally created to be enjoyed after celebratory meals. Caraway and fennel were said to refresh and ease digestion, particularly after celebratory meals - which were often large and overindulgent. Now, Aquavit is enjoyed all year round - but still mostly on celebrations. It's best ice cold, or chilled. Traditionally it is preferred alone. More recently, this fresh and inviting drink is often enjoyed just like gin - with tonic, ginger ale, and at Orkney Spirits Limited, we are yet to find a cocktail this doesn't taste amazing in.
