Pierre Ferrand Sélection des Anges is a super-premium Grande Champagne (1er Cru de Cognac) bottling from Maison Ferrand. Owner and master distiller Alexandre Gabriel drew inspiration from the traditions of the region, its chalk-limestone terroir and the long craft of ageing in humid cellars. Crafted from 100% Ugni Blanc, it’s a blend of older and younger eaux-de-vie with an average age of over 25 years. Amber-brown in the glass, it’s rich yet poised. On the nose and palate, think of baking on a spring day: brioche and warm pastry notes of raisin, honey, vanilla and apricot, followed by elegant florals of rose and jasmine. The texture is full-bodied and warming, with ripe fruit, smooth oak and peppery spice, plus coconutty, nutty and delicately herbal nuances. Award judges also note a slightly sweet edge of brown sugar and fruit cake, with waxy richness, ripe fruit and a warming finish. The name translates as ‘Selection of the Angels’ and nods to the angels’ share: the portion of spirit that slowly evaporates during barrel ageing. Maison Ferrand describes cellars whose walls darken over time as that heavenly vapour rises. Even the bottle tells a story—the ornate metal stopper is a replica of former owner Elie Ferrand’s walking-stick handle, designed to guard the treasure within. How to enjoy: pour 25–30ml into a tulip glass and sip slowly. A few drops of water can open the floral lift; pair with dried apricots, almond pastries, walnut tart or dark chocolate.
