In 2009, the head of Maison Ferrand, Alexandre Gabriel, was celebrating twenty years at the helm of the historic Cognac house. To mark the occasion, the team reached into their cellars, selected the finest extra-old Barbados rum they had, and created a one-off blend in his honour. It was so good that it became a permanent part of the range — and today the XO 20th Anniversary is widely regarded as the rum that helped define the entire premium sipping-rum category. The rum itself is a blend of pot and column still spirit from Barbados, drawn from the island's West Indies Rum Distillery. It's aged first in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks, anywhere from 8 to 15 years, where the tropical heat and humidity accelerate maturation and draw out deep, rich flavours. The rum is then shipped across the Atlantic to south-west France, where it rests for a further period in ex-Ferrand cognac casks — a cooler, slower "continental" ageing that adds elegance and polish. This double-ageing method, combining two climates and two cask types, is the signature of the house. The result, bottled at 40% ABV, is smooth, creamy, and generous: toasted coconut and ripe banana lead, backed by vanilla, milk chocolate, cocoa, candied orange, and a touch of mango, all carried into a long, warming, gently spiced finish. It's a rum built for slow sipping. A note for the curious: the brand you may know as Plantation Rum was renamed Planteray at the start of 2024 — same rum, same Maison Ferrand craftsmanship, new name.
