Poggio San Polo Rosso di Montalcino 2013 Wine 75 cl (Case of 3)

Poggio San Polo Rosso di Montalcino wine is bright and glossy ruby red in colour. On the nose, aromas of small fresh berries and a trace of morello cherry mingle with hints of blackberries, black cherries and vanilla. A fragrant wine with satisfying intensity, it is warm, smooth and medium-bodied with finely-balanced tannins. Dry yet fresh with a persistent, aromatic finish.The grapes for this Rosso came from three hectares of vineyards planted between 1,990 and 2,000 metres. They are situated at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level, facing south-southeast on chalky clay soils. The vines are spur-cordon trained and planted at a density of 7,000 vines per hectare. Yields were 49 hectolitres per hectare.An unusual vintage in Montalcino started with a very rainy spring during budding and flowering. The wet weather and low temperatures meant that not all the buds set or began growing. The clusters that formed were small and sparse but of high quality. The summer was very hot and dry and not a single drop of rain fell on the slopes in June and July. Fortunately, the exposure of the vineyards and the reduction in temperatures during the night due to the altitude, allowed the vines to continue their growth cycle. 20 mm (nearly an inch) of rain fell on the 26th of August and regenerated the vines for the last month of ripening. The wines produced have great character and personality with prominent tannins and considerable acidity.The grapes were hand picked into 17 kilo boxes. After gentle pressing, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with maceration on the skins lasting around 14-16 days at 27-30 degree C. The wine was then aged for 12 months in medium-toasted, second-use French oak barriques (Allier) followed by a month of bottle ageing.
