Description

Cantina Mesa 'Giunco' Vermentino di Sardegna Wine is green and gold-tinged straw colour. The nose is complex, showing a fine intensity, with notes of apple, pear and a hint of citrus. Crisp and delicious on the palate, it is marked by tangy fruit and a pleasant mineral-edged finish. The 2017 vintage displays a slightly more pronounced acidity than the previous year. The grapes are grown in the Sulcis area on the south-western tip of Sardinia. The climate here is Mediterranean with low rainfall, frequent north-westerly winds, high temperatures in spring and summer, a mild autumn and winters which vary from dry and cold through to relatively mild. Soils are medium textured, naturally sandy and chalky-clay, with a rocky, schistous character. Moderate nutrient levels and good levels of minerals add a distinctive character to the resulting wines. The vines are trained using the espalier method and spur-cordon pruned with yields around 45 hectolitres per hectare. The 2017 winter experienced above-average rains, lasting well into the spring. This built up valuable groundwater reserves in this area, the Sulcis, that commonly sees very long periods of totally dry conditions. The summer, in contrast to the two preceding seasons, did not bring spells of torrid, humid heat, so the vines were able to progress through their growth stages in a slow, consistent manner, in particular during the cluster ripening phase, with significant accumulation of polyphenols and aromatic compounds. October brought quite unusual weather conditions, concluding with warm, sunny days and cool night-time temperatures, ideal for aromatic development in the berries. The result was that the white grapes, whose harvest was 10 days later than usual, exhibited a beautiful balance between sugars, acids, and aromatic compounds. The grapes were gently pressed and the must fermented at 14 - 16 degree C. After clarification and stabilisation, the wine matured for four months in stainless steel and a minimum of one month in bottle. It comes with the vintage information as follows: Vintage: 2017; Grape varieties: 100% Vermentino; Region: Sardegna, Italy; Winemaker: Stefano Cova; Closure: Natural Cork; Classification: DOC; Alcohol(ABV): 13%; Acidity: 5.6 g/l; Residual Sugar: OJg/l; Wine pH: 3.41; Bottle Sizes: 50cl, 75cI.
