Manufacturer's Description Neutral density filters, or grey filters, are used if too much light restricts creative possibilities. They reduce the light in accordance with their density; they therefore allow longer exposure times or more widely opened apertures.These filters are excellent for enabling movement to be captured in an image – by allowing longer exposure times. For example water can appear soft and smoky, rather than frozen in time.Grey filters can create ingenious effects in architecture or urban photography too, with long exposures times of several hours, people walking through the shot are blurred or can even ‘disappear’ completely.With this filter and without changing the f-stop, a shutter speed of 1/60 s is changed to a full second, thus requiring the use of a tripod. Flowing water is rendered as flowing in the photo, and people moving in streets are dissolved in unsharpness or become invisible. Because of its higher transmission in the red beyond 660 nm, this filter brings a slightly warm tone to color photographs. If this effect is undesirable, a B+W UV-/IR-Blocking Filter 486 in front of the neutral density filter (not behind it!) remedies that situation. The filter factor is 64x. The extremely clear Schott glass has a MRC multi coating. The MRC coating is first and foremost a broadband anti-reflection coating, improving image quality. Light can bounce off the camera sensor, reflecting back on to the inside of the filter and then bouncing back on to the sensor - causing ‘ghost’ images.When you consider that many exposures with ND filters will be over one minute, MRC coating can have a dramatic effect on the finished image quality.But MRC by B+W is not only an extraordinarily effective multiple layer coating, it is also harder than glass, so that it protects filters from scratches (for instance when cleaning the filters), and it is also water and dirt repellent. B+W filters are made with Schott glass which guarantees the very highest glass quality. Good quality cameras and lenses are a major investment and at B+W we believe that if you should have the best quality filters. There’s no point in buying an expensive, optically superior lens, only to put a piece of inferior glass over the front of it!B+W filters all feature brass mounts, designed to fix the high-quality filter glass in position “for life”.
