Nella periodizzazione tradizionale della storia dell'arte esiste un lungo intervallo oscuro tra l'architettura dell'età imperiale romana e quella del primo Medioevo. La vecchia tesi di un progressivo declino della cultura classica e di timidi accenni di rinascita nel primo Medioevo appare tuttavia superata da tempo. Piuttosto i concetti chiave di questo momento storico sono: continuità, cristianizzazione e innovazione. Fulcro di tale sviluppo è la creazione dell'edificio di culto cristiano, che si rivelerà poi uno dei temi più fecondi della storia dell'architettura europea. Ma anche il permanere del patrimonio monumentale ereditato dall'antichità e gli impulsi scaturiti dallo stanziarsi dei Longobardi, gli influssi bizantini e la nuova dimensione europea dell'impero carolingio caratterizzano questo periodo. Tutti questi argomenti sono nel presente volume oggetto di trattazione da parte di studiosi di fama internazionale. Si illustra la prima fioritura dell'edilizia chiesastica nei centri principali dell'Italia tardoantica: Roma, Milano e Ravenna e nelle altre città e territori dell'Italia settentrionale e meridionale. Si prende inoltre in esame la permanenza dell'eredità urbanistica e architettonica del mondo antico, sotto l'aspetto sia della continuità d'uso che dell'influenza esercitata come fonte di rievocazione e d'ispirazione. All'altra estremità della trattazione si profilano i nuovi abitati del primo Medioevo.
