La expresión "Padres Apostólicos" se ha convertido en una designación útil, aunque poco rigurosa, por lo que no hay un acuerdo unánime a propósito de los escritos que se deben englobar bajo ese título. Se trata de obras heterogéneas por su interés teológico, género literario, autoridad, datación y origen, que miran a las necesidades y circunstancias que viven las comunidades cristianas entre la segunda mitad del siglo I y mediados del siglo II. Algunos de los autores de esos escritos son conocidos, como es el caso de Clemente de Roma, Ignacio de Antioquía, Policarpo de Esmirna o Hermas; otros han permanecido en el anonimato o en la pseudoepigrafía como la Enseñanza de los Doce Apóstoles, La Epístola del Pseudo-Bernabé, la Carta de la Iglesia de Esmirna a la Iglesia de Filomelio (también conocida como Martirio de Policarpo) o la homilía que ha llegado hasta nosotros como Segunda de Clemente. En el presente volumen de "Padres Apostólicos" se ha incluido la denominada Carta a Diogneto, aunque en realidad es un escrito más emparentado por su temática y forma con la posterior literatura apologética: son las respuestas que un cristiano anónimo dio a las prepreguntas que bullían en la cabeza de un pagano llamado Diogneto.
