La Biblia comentada por los Padres de la Iglesia, Volumen NT 1a Para el Año Litúrgico - Ciclo A El Evangelio de Mateo destaca como uno de los textos bíblicos preferidos por los Padres de la Iglesia a la hora de estudiar y proclamar la Palabra de Dios. La tradición de comentarios patrísticos sobre Mateo comienza a mediados del siglo tercero con el que lleva a cabo Orígenes. En el occidente de lengua latina, donde los comentarios no aparecieron hasta aproximadamente un siglo más tarde, el primer comentario sobre Mateo lo escribió Hilario de Poitiers a mediados del siglo cuarto. Desde entonces, el primer Evangelio se convirtió en uno de los textos más frecuentemente comentados por los Santos Padres. Entre ellos sobresale el comentario de Jerónimo, en cuatro libros, y el Opus imperfectum in Matthaeum, obra muy valiosa, aunque anónima e incompleta. Se conservan también fragmentos de catenas griegas, que se derivan de comentarios realizados por Teodoro de Heraclea, Apolinar de Laodicea, Teodoro de Mopsuestia y Cirilo de Alejandría. Las antiguas homilías también ofrecen extensos comentarios sobre el primer Evangelio. Destacan entre ellas las noventa homilías de Juan Crisóstomo y las cincuenta y nueve de Cromacio de Aquileia. Además, existe un buen número de homilías dominicales y de días festivos compuestas por grandes figuras, como Agustín y Gregorio Magno, entre otros. Esta rica abundancia de comentarios patrísticos, muchos de los cuales presentamos aquí traducidos al castellano por primera vez, nos ofrece un generoso y variado alimento sobre la antigua interpretación del primer Evangelio.
