C'est le premier exemple d'un genre litteraire appele a un grand succes dans l'Antiquite tardive et le haut Moyen Age, celui de l'epopee biblique. Longtemps percue comme un simple habillage virgilien destine a seduire un public cultive, cette forme particuliere de la paraphrase biblique, qui s'epanouira avec les uvres d'Arator, de Sedulius ou d'Avitus, est l'expression litteraire du mouvement de fond, fait de rejet et d'union, de continuite de pensee et de nouveaute qui installe le christianisme dans la societe et la culture romaines. Utilisant et depassant la technique de la paraphrase heritee des ecoles de rhetorique, Juvencus ecrit un evangile poetique dont la fidelite apparente cache un inflechissement significatif. Romanise, detourne de son contexte juif, le message du Christ y devient une bonne nouvelle universelle, et les Romains le peuple choisi pour sa diffusion. Ainsi, le heros epique, par petites touches, se transforme en Sauveur du monde.
