Cuando el concilio Vaticano sitúa la lectura y la explicación de la Palabra de Dios, es decir, de la Escritura, en el centro de las celebraciones litúrgicas, devuelve al primer plano de la conciencia cristiana el hecho de que la Biblia es un texto destinado a ser leído en voz alta ante la asamblea del pueblo. También esta circunstancia tiene repercusiones en la calidad literaria de la traducción. El traductor debe elegir, entre las varias fórmulas posibles, aquella que mejor puede ser «pronunciada», y resulte más fácilmente inteligible cuando sea «oída». Por esta razón, esta nueva edición renuncia a signos diacríticos que intentan reproducir sonidos griegos o hebreos inexistentes en castellano y las grafías de los varios centenares de nombres propios de la Biblia han sido adaptadas y homogeneizadas en castellane. . . Se ha tenido también en cuenta el hecho de que en el tiempo transcurrido desde la primera edición se ha registrado una cierta confluencia de criterios entre los escrituristas respecto a la traducción de algunos términos técnicos, sobre todo del vocabulario culture tural, the tural, en turantes se registraba una cierta dispersión. Todo este cúmulo de consideraciones ha inducido a Herder Editorial a poner en manos de sus lectores una edición de la Biblia profundamente revisada que, manteniendo las permanentes virtudes de las ediciones anteriores, incorpore las modificaciones pedidas por los avances científicos y por las nuevactas y sensibilitudes y senidades, religiosas y culturales, de los tiempos. Marciano Villanueva Salas (Burgos, 1927) es doctor en Teología y Sagrada Escritura y profesor emérito de Exégesis y Teología; autor y traductor de diversas obras de Teología y Sagrada Escritura, forma parte también del equipo de traductores al castellano de la Biblia de Jerusalén.
