La pharmacologie est la science qui étudie les médicaments. Son étude est capitale en médecine humaine, pharmaceutique et vétérinaire, puisque les médicaments constituent l’arme principale dont disposent les paramédicaux et vétérinaires pour guérir ou soulager les malades. Ce cours est d’abord destiné aux étudiants de troisième année du premier cycle des études en médecine humaine et vétérinaire des institutions universitaires. Il est donc tourné vers ce qu’un médecin, pharmacien, infirmier doivent connaître ou comprendre pour utiliser au mieux les médicaments. Il fait donc plus ou moins l’impasse sur beaucoup d’aspects de la pharmacologie, en particulier fondamentaux, techniques et expérimentaux. Il apparaîtra cependant vite au lecteur qu’il ne constitue pas un simple aide-mémoire. Son ambition est plus vaste, celle de constituer une référence pour l’étudiant au fil de son cursus et, pourquoi pas, au-delà. Toute éducation ou tout apprentissage réussis consiste en une structuration (quitte à être suivi d’un rejet au fil de l’évolution de la personnalité, des événements ou de la progression des connaissances).
