"Wo auch immer die Wiege des Menschengeschlechts stand, da stand auch die der Pharmazie und Medizin. Unzweifelhaft übte ja die Menschenmutter instinktiv als allererste die Heil- und Arzneikunst aus. Sie erkundete die schmerzlindernden Eigenschaften mancher Kräuter und die des kühlenden Wassers, mit linden Händen pflegte sie die Wunden, die der Gatte im Kampfe für sie davongetragen, und Mutterliebe lehrte sie ihres Kindes Krankheit heilen. Die Frau, die Priesterin des Hauses, übertrug bald ihr Amt als Heil- und Arzneikundige auf Frauen, dann auf Männer, die ob hervorragender Eigenschaften ihrer Volksgenossen Führer und Priester wurden. Aus ihrem Innern heraus hatten die Völker religiöse Anschauungen geschöpft und sie unter den Eindrücken, welche die sie umgebende Natur auf sie ausübte, gestaltet. Heiterer Art wurden sie unter ewig blauendem Himmel, unter dem leuchtenden Tages- und dem freundlichen Nachtgestirn, beim Blick auf lachende Fluren, die süße Früchte in Fülle und leicht zähmbaren nutzbringenden Tieren Weide boten, und die den Menschen körperliches Wohlbefinden und ein Leben „wie im Paradiese" gewährten." Dieses Buch über die Geschichte der Pharmazie ist ein unveränderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1904.
